What We Face

With only one branch of government, it’s an uphill climb for Republicans to oppose Obama on anything. But, when you take into account how poisonous the media is towards Republicans, it’s understandable why they get spooked.

People love to talk about the Reagan era and how Reagan was able to get things done even with the media against him. It was against him, but not to the extent it is today. The media has morphed into a hideous monster that also includes all entertainment outlets. Movies, of course, but news broadcasts, talk shows and comedies are all laced with anti GOP sentiment. On the web, the supposedly fair Politico has a major journalist who wants Ted Cruz and John Boehner dead.

How do you work with people as hate filled as Roger Simon who said this in a column titled “Government shutdown unleashes racism”: “Question: If Ted Cruz and John Boehner were both on a sinking ship, who would be saved? Answer: America.”

He followed that with:

Harsh? Look around you at what is happening to America and you will see harsh. I am not talking about closed parks and monuments. I am talking about the funds cut to nearly 9 million mothers and young children for food, breastfeeding support and infant formula.

That is harsh. Making a war against babies is harsh. And for what? Because Cruz, Republican senator from Texas, has grown so drunk on the sound of his own voice and so besotted with illusions of his own grandeur that he believes halting government today will propel him into the White House tomorrow?

This weekend, racism came out of the closet. (Which assumes it has ever been in the closet.) Protesters marched through the streets of Washington on Sunday with a Confederate flag and then a protester lounged against the White House fence with one. Displaying the Confederate flag in front of a home occupied by a black family was meant to send a particular, and particularly repellent, message.

This is rabid journalism designed to sway, not to report.

But that is what we have now, visible from our own Memphis newspaper and TV news broadcasts to national network, internet and print media.

And we wonder why our guys won’t fight?
