Letter Presses House to Defund PP

Representative Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina has penned a letter to Speaker Boehne Majority Leader McCarthy, and Whip Scalise asking the House to Defund Planned Parenthood. Here it is and the list of people who have signed it:

It is with great urgency that we write concerning Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

We are deeply disturbed at recent reports that Planned Parenthood has been selling the tissue of unborn babies for profit. As firm believers in the sanctity of life, beginning at conception, we are horrified at these reports. It is imperative that Congress do everything within its power to investigate these reports and take immediate action to stop them.

In the meantime, we must act to fully defund Planned Parenthood. Please know that we cannot and will not support any funding resolution – an appropriations bill, an omnibus package, a continuing resolution, or otherwise – that contains any funding for Planned Parenthood, including mandatory funding streams.

In addition, we think that it would be helpful to all House Republicans to have a special conference at the earliest possible date to discuss how best to address these atrocities.

These activities by Planned Parenthood cannot go unanswered by Congress. We look forward to your response and prompt attention in this matter.

Respectfully,

Senate Letter to Defund Planned Parenthood

The Honorable Mitch McConnell
Majority Leader, U.S. Senate
Capitol Building
Washington D.C. 20004

In light of recent and horrific revelations that Planned Parenthood is trafficking in fetal tissue and body parts from abortions, we urge you not to schedule or facilitate the consideration of any legislation that authorizes or appropriates federal dollars for Planned Parenthood.

The callous view that those in the abortion industry, like Planned Parenthood, take toward women and unborn children is an affront to natural rights and human decency. Whether or not one accepts the view of our President that abortions should be legal and widely available at any stage of pregnancy, we should all be able to unite around our President’s stated understanding of the “tradition in this town, historically, of not financing abortions as part of government-funded health care.”

Yet still, Planned Parenthood receives billions of dollars from government sources, and according to its own annual report, abortions accounted for 94 percent of its pregnancy-related services. Community health centers, charities, state health departments and other government entities all provide women’s health services without abortions. These community centers outnumber Planned Parenthood facilities almost 14 to one across the country, offering better access to real health care as opposed to what Planned Parenthood purports to offer.

The American people should no longer be forced to fund the abortion industry; therefore we will oppose any government funding legislation that would authorize or provide federal funds for Planned Parenthood.

Sincerely,
Sen. Ted Cruz R TX
Sen. David Vitter R LA

Erick Erickson, conservative blogger, adds:

The only fool-proof way to assess whether your congressman is committed to defunding Planned Parenthood is whether they signed the Mulvaney letter. There are 34 members who have signed the letter. Now there are other members who are supportive, but for whatever reason they are hedging their bets. In particular, there are no conservative women in the letter, and on pro-life issues within the House Conference, they are looked to heavily on whether to fight. Here is who I would focus on today, and lets make this a national call alert into these offices.

Shut down their phones.

Must-have, generally conservative women:
Marsha Blackburn: 202-225-2811
Vicky Hartzler: 202-225-2876
Cynthia Lummis: 202-225-2311

Leadership-friendly women who view themselves as pro-life:
Martha Roby: 202-225-2901
Mia Love: 202-225-3011
Jackie Walorski: 202-225-3915
Renee Ellmers: 202-225-4531
Virginia Foxx: 202-225-2071
Diane Black: 202-225-4231
Cathy McMorris Rodgers (who wants to be Majority Leader of the GOP): 202-225-2006

House conservatives missing from the letter:
Marlin Stutzman: 202-225-4436
Ron DeSantis: 202-225-2706
Mo Brooks: (202) 225-4801
Paul Gosar: 202-225-2315
Andy Harris: 202-225-5311
Scott Garrett: 202-225-4465
Alex Mooney: 202) 225-2711
