A Christmas Aside

Many people in Midtown know our newspaper carrier, Jeff Cain. He has delivered newspapers on his route since 1968. He is dedicated to doing a good job and dedicated to getting up at an ungodly hour day after day, holidays included, to get the CA on your lawn.

For this he gets very little remuneration. Many people don’t know that he has to supply his own blue sleeves and if someone doesn’t get a newspaper, he is fined $3. It’s more than the newspaper costs, but they do that anyhow.

A couple weeks back Jeff had borrowed a van to deliver his morning batch, when he fell asleep at the wheel and ran into something. He broke 12 ribs, his ankle and neck, and fractured his hip and pelvis. He also lost his hearing aid in the rush to the hospital.

Jeff will be at Regional 1 for a long time, followed by rehab. His parents are dead, he isn’t married and he only has an uncle to help him. It doesn’t look like he’ll be returning to his route.

Through Nextdoor Neighbors facebook page my husband, Lou, has set up a Go Fund Me Account for Jeff. If you would like to contribute to it, you can find it here: https://www.gofundme.com/n9fndkv8.

You don’t need to know Jeff, live in Midtown or be one of his customers to recognize a good cause, especially at this time of year.

So often it’s dubious to give to a foundation or group; you don’t know how much of the money will actually benefit someone. In this case, it will go to a worthy individual.
