Two candidates introduced themselves at last night’s Midtown Republican Club meeting.
First, Judge Valerie Smith, attended. Although she has just been appointed by Governor Haslam to fill a vacancy, she will be running on the August ballot in Circuit Court Division 3.
Although as she commented, judicial races are not partisan, Judge Smith has been active in our local party. She served on the Shelby GOP steering committee for District 93 and worked on the campaigns for AG Amy Weirich and Judge Bobby Carter.
So far, Michael Floyd has announced he is challenging her. He also says he’s a Republican, but has not been active in the Shelby GOP.
Also present was David Maldonado. A resident of Collierville, he is running for Congress in the 8th district already crowded with Dr. George Flinn, David Kustoff and State Senator Brian Kelsey.
He works for Ford and explains that after he attended a Billy Graham rally in Puerto Rico he was inspired and did mission work in the Dominican Republic. Maldonado admired the spirit of the people he was working with and realized that with all the blessings he’s had he asked himself “what can I do to give back?”
He has decided to run for Congress and “make something happen for the people of West Tennessee.”
