For Republicans who endured the agonizing 2000 post election challenge, George W. Bush held a special place with us. The month long agony of those court rulings made his victory over Gore even sweeter. Then, after two terms in which he was ridiculed and disparaged, we felt even more that we had his back.
Most people respected that he did not interfere with his successor’s presidency. Bush cloaked himself in honor and nobility to keep silent about the terrible assaults on our freedom that Obama did. OK, maybe 43 was just too much of a class act to object.
We cut him some slack in 2016 as his brother Jeb was running. Obviously GW must have been unhappy at Jeb!s early loss.
But now Bush has just blown that legacy away. He, his daughters and his father have been squawking about Trump in a very ugly way.
43 made a speech at his George W. Bush Institute in October with sly barbs attacking Trump for not being a globalist. Bush said, “We’ve seen a return of isolationist sentiments forgetting that American security is directly threatened by the chaos and despair of distant places…We’ve seen nationalism distorted into nativism, and forgotten the dynamism that immigration has always brought to America..
“Bigotry seems emboldened, our politics seems more vulnerable to conspiracy theories and outright fabrication…We’ve seen a return of isolationist sentiments forgetting that American security is directly threatened by the chaos and despair of distant places.”
Really? Is Trump an isolationist in his current tour of Japan, China and Vietnam? Are bigots stifling free speech? Well, they are stifling us on the right, but the left is unrestrained.
His daughters recounted how they cried election night when Hillary lost. Unthinkable to any Republican. Dad 41 called Trump a “blowhard.” Not sure he ever said anything that tough against the Clintons or Obama.
Now GW and his dad have worked with Mark K. Updegrove on a book called “The Last Republicans: Inside the Extraordinary Relationship Between George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush.” Updegrove is a big lib who loves to write for lib rags like the NYT and comment on alphabet network shows.
Leaks of the book’s content have been oozing out before the Nov. 14 release. The latest one is that 43 derides both his vice president and defense secretary. He says of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld that they “didn’t make one f****** decision. The fact that there was any doubt in anyone’s mind about who the president was, blows my mind.”
Were I Cheney or Rumsfeld, I would brag about that because in retrospect their decisions don’t look so good. Most of us already remember that 41 blew it when he said no new taxes, “read my lips,” then taxed us.
41 also has come under attack for sexual harassment. Maybe he’d best stick to his wheelchair and shut up.
What a couple of self promoting blowhards!
It will be interesting to see how many sales the book makes. They’ll all be embraced on the news networks as they can share in the Trump trashing. Music to their ears.
But not to ours. Bye bye Bushes. Sorry I wasted my time.
