The CA has an interesting front page layout today.
Above the fold is a giant picture of Mayor Strickland. He’s looking towards the left with a smile on his face. He looks like he doesn’t have a care in the world. “Taking a look back” is the wording atop the picture with a year in review story headlined: “Statue moves cap busy 2017 for Memphis mayor.”
Next to him is the top story: “7 charged after mall fight and shooting.”
Whoever laid out the page – probably someone in Nashville or Iowa – didn’t consider the interesting juxtaposition. It’s appropriate, though.
Mayor Strickland has not paid much attention to crime in our city. He may be doing something, but it’s not apparent. Our neighborhood streets are shopping centers for thieves and our shopping centers are meccas for more thieves and attackers. Memphians do not feel safe here.
But this doesn’t seem to bother Strickland very much. He figures he can pander to one part of the community and that will assure his reelection. I don’t believe it will.
At least someone feels good about life in the city. The rest of us, not so much.
