Virtue Signaling at Fox

When I found out that Notre Dame was aflame yesterday, I turned to Fox News. I, as everyone else, watched in horror. Who could watch the spire fall and not feel terrible? You didn’t have to be Catholic to be sad at the loss of great art, history and craftsmanship. It took centuries to build and hours to fall.

There was really no other place to watch the live coverage than Fox News. Fox Business did not carry it wall to wall, if you will, and One America News did not have enough people stationed there to broadcast continually. MSNBC, CNN and other network lackeys were not even a possibility.

Unfortunately it fell to Shepherd Smith to lead the coverage on Fox. Since giving up nightly newscasts, he positioned himself to be the one to swoop in whenever any disaster occurs. In the past he has shown himself to be very biased and always pushing the audience into his liberal orbit.

He didn’t fail to offend this time either.
The Gateway Pundit nailed him:

Fox News host Shepard Smith cut off a French elected official who speculated the Notre Dame fire was not an accident.

The Fox News chyron was pushing the narrative that the fire was an accident and stated that “the spire was under construction before the fire, collapse.”

“Not on my watch,” Shepard Smith said scolding Philippe Karsenty, a French elected official who questioned the “politically correct” narrative that the Notre Dame fire was an accident.

Mr. Karsenty brought up the fact that churches across France are getting desecrated and vandalized on a weekly basis — this angered Shepard Smith because how dare anyone speak the truth.

“Even the Nazis didn’t dare destroy it [Notre Dame cathedral],” Karsenty said. “And you have to know for the last year we’ve had churches desecrated each and every week all over France so of course you will hear the story of the politically correct which will tell you it is probably an accident.”

Shepard Smith immediately cut off Karsenty — “Sir. Sir! Sir! We’re not going to speculate here of the cause of something for which we don’t know.”

Shepard Smith would not let the guest speak and eventually ended the call saying, “No sir, not here, not on my watch!”

What hypocrisy! Speculation has been what Smith has been about whenever it comes to something about Donald Trump. He, like his MSNBC and CNN counterparts, has always been quick to push the Russia hoax narrative. Smith hasn’t let facts stop him there.

Why not consider the possibility of terrorism? The news media in the 1990s never did much investigation into the rise of radical Islam. They were deaf and blind to it. When 9/11 happened, most of us were completely in the dark about Al Qaeda, Bin Laden and radical Islam. The American public had not been informed about it. Who immediately thought of Al Qaeda when the towers were falling? Big media fail.

Smith was finally relieved of his constant need to prattle when Neil Cavuto came on at 3. He’s another self satisfied sanctimonious twit who foists the liberal angle on viewers in espousing anti Trump blather. So it was no surprise when he followed right behind Smith in the virtue signaling.

The Daily Caller has the encounter Cavuto had with Catholic League spokesman Bill Donahue:

“Well, Neil, if it is an accident, it’s a monumental tragedy. But forgive me for being suspicious. Just last month, a 17th-century church was set on fire in Paris. We’ve seen tabernacles knocked down, crosses have been torn down, statues, —” Donohue stated.

As Donohue mentioned, a number of churches in France have been vandalized during the early part of 2019. Vandals have smashed statues, knocked down tabernacles, burned an altar cloth, destroyed the Eucharist and smeared a cross with excrement.
“We don’t know that. So if we can avoid what your suspicions might be. I do want to look at what happened now,” Cavuto responded, cutting off his guest. “A very pricey rebuilding and renovation effort going on that involved a good deal of Catholic fundraising campaign I know in this country and abroad. This renovation was paid for up front. So, in other words, all the monies were there. Now I’m wondering how much more the Catholic Church commits to this or do you think they now first want to get to the bottom of it?”

“First, they have to get to the bottom of it and they will rebuild it. There’s no question about that. They certainly, the Catholic Church will come up for the money for it, that’s not even a question. I’m sorry. When I find out that the Eucharist is being destroyed and excrement is being smeared on crosses, —” Donohue pushed back.
“I love you, Bill, but we cannot make conjectures about this. So, thank you. Bill, I’m sorry. Thanks very much. I do want to let people know, and again we’re not trying to be rude to our guests here. There’s so much here we don’t know about what happened here.”

Did the Murdochs’ empire feel pushback from Muslims after the New York Post’s front page concerning Rep. Ilhan Omar’s thoughts about 9/11?

AOC had suggested a ban on the Post. “Ocasio-Cortez applauded the boycott initiated by the Yemeni American Merchants Association (YAMA), posting to Twitter on Saturday, ‘Two years ago, Bodega owners across NYC (& cheered by neighbors)shut their shops citywide to protest Trump’s #MuslimBan. Today, that same community is banding together to reject sales of the NY Post at bodegas citywide. This is what real unity (& NYC solidarity) looks like’.”

It doesn’t take much for media people to run. Just the thought of a boycott and an accusation of racism will do.

Sad, because there are a lot of questions to be asked in the Notre Dame fire.

Why not talk about the threats to it by Muslims?
Why ignore the spate of attacks on Catholic churches in France before this?
Why did it take so long for firefighters to get there?
Why did it start just after the cathedral closed?
Why were no workmen there and how did the fire start if they had planned to keep electrical stuff away from the wood?
These questions may be easily explained, but with the horrible reputation the media has for not investigating – and for downright lying – why should we believe them or the French government?

In our own country look at the massacre in Las Vegas. We have never received answers to who did it, what the role of the FBI was and how it happened. No one in the media has pursued it either.

That’s the sad state of affairs today. Add to it that the media and many governments want the secular world to replace all faith, just watch and this story will disappear.

If a mosque had burned; if a black church had been on fire; if a gay nightclub had been in flames, Smith & co. would have immediately started in on Islamaphobia, racism, homophobia. They would have jumped to conclusions faster than the fire spread.

It’s just when it’s Christianity – and in particular, Catholicism – it won’t be defended.

They certainly didn’t.
