More on Beck and the Neelys

Glenn Beck’s detailed his bad experience at a bbq restaurant on his radio program Tuesday.

It started for me on a Friday night, this last Friday at a barbecue restaurant. Now why my daughter who lives in the city thought that coming from Texas we should go have barbecue in New York City is beyond me, but we did. As we walked in, my wife said, oh, my gosh, this is so‑and‑so very famous, you know, barbecue couple that do this barbecue thing, you know, on TV. And I said, “Oh, okay.” She said, “It’s supposed to be really good.” Well, I have to tell you, the look that I was given by those in charge at this restaurant was, how dare you even come in here. It was quite amazing. I said to my wife as we were walking up the stairs, I said, this isn’t going to go well. And she said, no, this was really a mistake. This is a minority‑owned shop. Was that the line that I dared to cross? No? No, it couldn’t be because there were white people in there. So it must be something else besides my character. It’s amazing to me. One would think that ‑‑ you wouldn’t want to shun people that might have diverse opinions. Maybe they could put a second door in or another entrance in for people like me.

I wondered if this famous couple was Memphis’ Neelys (see article below). Yesterday on their facebook page the Neelys posted this:

We have operated restaurants for two and a half decades. We always take pride in inviting our customers, family and friends to come and enjoy a great dining experience. We welcome everyone to come and dine with us. We strive to treat every customer with respect. When visiting our restaurant, we consider it an honor to serve you. We love all of our fans and we thank you for your continued support.
Best Regards, Pat & Gina

They don’t name Glenn Beck, do they, but something obviously happened to prompt them to post this. The blandness of this reinforces my belief that they secretly had no problem with the treatment Beck received.
The comments after it address the situation with a range of opinions. discuss the situation.ring Many are supportive, but some take the Neelys to task for their behavior. Here are some examples:

IF what Glenn says is NOT true, then let the Neelys say so. What do you think caused them to post this in the FIRST PLACE???

Then please explain why the Neelys chose to post THIS message at THIS time, in light of what may possibly have occurred in their NYC restaurant?

If the Neelys wanted to “clear the air,” then they could simply say that it was NOT their restaurant that mistreated Glenn. However, this post, out of the blue as it is, does NOTHING to deny what may or may not have happened. If it IS their way of addressing the issue, it goes about it the wrong way. Glenn is an honorable man. He did NOT mention the name of the restaurant because he believes in the ability of people to have and run their own businesses. Running a business means that ALL customers are to be treated with RESPECT, no matter who they are or what they believe. As I said before, the timing of this post is a bit too coincidental. I’m not the only one who has been able to figure it out.

Others dispute.

We don’t know for sure WHICH RESTAURANTS are in question. Show me PROOF that Mr. Beck was mistreated. Did he contact the managements? His lawyer? Please explain to me why Glenn Beck chose to make allegations, in light that he doesn’t have PROOF!

An even more damning – for a restaurateur – in this comment, which mirrors the recent experience of Memphians who visited their restaurant here:

Well,i dont know about all this….but I do know,i traveled all the way from Monroe,La. area to Memphis last summer just to see Graceland & eat at Neely”s because I love their show & personalities….only to be sorely disappointed.I was drooling thinking about eating the best ribs, ever.i didnt mind the long wait when I thought I would be getting lip smackn ribs. When the food got to my sticky table & sticky floor,i found my food to taste like warmed over left overs! I still love the Neelys but I hope they find some trustworthy employee”s to take care of the restauraunt in their absence.i think the employees just played around for awhile & then just micro waved my food.
