The Midtown Republican Club’s presence came as a surprise to many who visited the Central Gardens parade on Carr.
Although we had the permission of the Central Gardens Association and the homeowner’s to set up on his lawn, we still had a little difficulty with one official who seemed shocked that Republicans had a club and dared to invade a so called Democrat stronghold. She would not allow our Shelby County Republican Party banner, nor would she allow us a table on the sidewalk as all the others had. Whenever I encounter such an attitude I laugh to myself as a person must feel threatened to act that way. Had there been a Midtown Democrat party table I would have said they have every right to be there, too.
Many came up to us and were happy to know others share their views.
Karen Williams sang the national anthem and other patriotic songs as winners were announced in the costume competition. People enjoyed popcorn, watermelon, hot dogs, cookies, snow cones, lemonade and our water as they strolled down the street.
Many thanks to Tommie Parker who loaned us the use of his yard. As it turned out he was not out of town as planned, but got to watch the parade.
Check out www.newzeal.blogspot.com. This New Zealander is following our politics and found some alarming clips from a radical Yale professor. He describes how Obama really is a radical and his dangerous animous towards Israel.
Not surprisingly, Yale prof agrees with B.O.
I’ve noticed a succession of stories downplaying the need for diagnostic tests such as mammograms; that certain operations are unnecessary or deleterious to your well being; and today’s AP story: “End of Life medicine grows intense, expensive.”
Certainly there seems to be a push by the media to influence people towards Obamacare. How else explain this sudden shift in sentiment? Every October we are barraged with entreaties to get tested for breast cancer or at other times, subjected to pleas for colonoscopy exams huckstered by celebrities such as Katie Couric. Today’s broadside tugs at the heartstrings of a young mother whose “precious time at home could have come sooner if the family had known how to talk about alternatives to aggressive treatment,” according to the deceased’s sister. Or maybe not. This is all speculation.
But it continues: “We might have just taken her home and stuck her in a beautiful chair outside under the sun and let her gorgeous little daughter play around her – not just torture her,” she continues.
The article decries how “Americans increasingly are treated to death.” The implication is that the treatments were doomed to fail anyhow and that the patient might have been spared pain.
Ever hear of a miracle? Ever hear of doctors being confounded by an unexplained turnaround? Whose to say a patient wants to be in pain, even if it’s at home. Maybe they’d prefer to take their chances in the hospital and fight for life.
Pope John Paul II decried our culture of death. The Obama administration does seem to be enamored with it when you consider the drip, drip, drip of such stories to reinforce Obamacare.
Today’s “Commercial Appeal” has a story about the City Council voting to remove the criminal notation of job applications. Although the paper does not tell how council members voted (I’d like to know how Midtown’s Jim Strickland voted) it is funny that Janis Fullilove was one of the sponsors.
Readers may remember her run ins with the law. I guess now she won’t have to mark the box when she applies for a job.
Seen on a car bumper today was this gem:
“Be a smart ass vote Democrat.”
I don’t think in this case there is a difference between smart and dumb.
One of the blogs I look at daily. strata-sphere.com, posted a commentary on the government lying to us.
A respondent expressed in a nutshell, I think, where we find ourselves.
Kathie wrote, “We are losing in Afghanistan, Fanny and Freddy own a huge percentage of every home in America, oil is spewing in the Gulf and our leaders are boating and golfing, the government owns our health, our schools (higher education) and spent a trillion dollars helping unions, who don’t put enough money away for pensions and our government has not passed a budget, tax breaks are set to expire and Congress is going to bail out the states again.
Our leaders lie and lie and lie and nobody prints the lie in bold on the front of every paper in the land.
God help us!”
In a one on one meeting at the White House with President Obama to discusss immigration, Arizona Republican Senator Jon Kyl told a townhall meeting of Obama’s stunning conclusion. “The problem is,” Obama said, “if we secure the border, then you all won’t have any reason to support comprehensive immigration reform.” The audience gasped.
Now the White House is denying that is what Obama said.
In anything I’ve ever read, Senator Kyl has been considered one of the highest, most ethical, righteous members of Congress. I don’t think the same conclusion can be drawn about our president. Sorry, but I will believe the senator.
Every time I’m in the checkout lane at Schnucks on Union I look at the board on the wall that lists the groups participating in the scrip program. Number one is Snowden School, which I think is a good thing. But some of the groups that follow it are troubling. Among them is the First Congregational Church which claims to house ACORN; the MidSouth Peace and Justice Center; which promotes left wing causes; the Dorothy Day Hospitality House whose national organization backs immigration rights rallies and advances Catholic social teaching including pacifism; and another group that provides special advocates for Hispanic (immigration?) clients.
I wonder if groups identified with the political right, such as the NRA or pro life groups would be included in this mix.
Somehow, I doubt it.
It seems this summer’s hot trial of Rod Blagoevich is maybe a little too hot for the Obama administration. They seem to have encouraged the media to keep it low profile. Hard to believe that nothing interesting is happening there since it started June 1. I find very little update about it in newspaper and TV reporting. I wonder why? Could it be that Rahm Emmanuel’s supposed decision to leave the Obama administration may have something to do with his future testimony?
