Republicans Are Tuned In

TVRepublicans will enjoy watching “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” on TLC Sunday night. Democrats probably won’t. Conservatives like Glenn Beck. Democrats really don’t. They prefer to watch Keith Olbermann. That’s no surprise.

You might be surprised, however, as network honchos were, that Republican taste in television mirrors most of the top ten programs.

According to Experian Simmons, a firm that looked into preferences, liberal TV people are going to have to start paying attention to us if they want to make money.

James Hibberd of the Hollywood Reporter discusses this in “The Reign of Right Wing Primetime.”

For example, Republicans watch “The Amazing Race,” “Modern Family,” “American Idol,” “V,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “The Mentalist,” “Survivor,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “Desperate Housewives,” “NCIS,” “The Batchelor,” “Lie to Me,” “How I Met Your Mother” and “Two and a Half Men.” In short, we’re populist, mainstream and like shows that reflect confidence in our public institutions. We like winners, we like entertainment and feeling good.

Democrats, by contrast, like “Mad Men,” “Dexter,” Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami,” “90210,” “Private Practice,” “Brothers and Sisters,” “30 Rock,” “The Good Wife,” “Damages,” “Community,” “Law & Order SVU,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Breaking Bad.”

The Left “seems to like shows about damaged people. Those are the kind of shows Republicans just stay away from,” says John Fetto, senior marketing manager at Experian Simmons.

John Nolte at says “we are key factors in mainstream ratings. We want to escape.” But, he notes, “I think it’s fair to say that the right wing popularity of programs like ‘Modern Family,’ ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Two and a Half Men’ pretty much puts to rest the lie that we’re a bunch of prudes only looking for reaffirmation of our own world order.”

Let’s hope Hollywood starts listening.
